Paul Mawhinney was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Over the years he has amassed what has become the world's largest record collection. Due to health issues and a struggling record industry Paul is being forced to sell his collection.
This is the story of a man and his records. I hope you enjoy it.

It's a damn shame no-one seems interested in such an incredible collection. Considering the treasures that must be contained within this archive I'm amazed that an official "archive" or "museum" hasn't expressed an interest (or maybe they have but can't afford it).
Surely one of those "got so much money I don't know what to do with it" movie/rock stars could stump up the readies to secure the future of this amazing lifes work.
I bet there's a few of you out there thinking the same as me right now!.....wouldn't mind a mooch through that lot :)
I know this video has been doing the rounds on YouTube for a while but I forgot about it until Licorice Pizza reminded me by just posting it on his great site (so I've done a copy cat and put it here too)
If you haven't seen it before...Enjoy!

This is a neat little video - obviously well crafted - but let's be honest about Paul's situation. When he initially put the collection on eBay, he was looking to get the full $50mm - AND he was only entertaining offers from people who signed an agreement not to break up the collection who would also make it available to the public...both stipulations he never put onto himself. Nobel, yes...but it's not hard to see why he couldn't find a buyer.
Now he's re-posted the collection on eBay, and is accepting offers on individual pieces and large chunks. This is what should've happened to begin with - the records can go out into the world and be heard, instead of sitting in a basement - or a single collection.
I admire Paul's collection, but I don't have a ton of sympathy for his predicament.
As a record collector myself with over 100,000 singles and only about 10,000 albums, I understand Paul's fellings - what will ever become of my life's passion?
Some collectors I understand have willed their collection to an educational library that would be able to house them. For such a massive collection that Paul had accumuled, the Smithsonian should be able to provide a public library for the records as a way of preserving our past history. Many of the original masters of these recordings have already been destroyed, and in some cases Paul's copy may the the only one available.

Dunno LC,
I reckon you could give him a run for his money :)

it's one awesome collection that's for sure...BUT.. is it just collecting for collecting's sake, I think so.
