SEX MOB DOES BOND

A great collection of Bond themes played in a cool groovy jazz style by the Sex Mob.

"Trumpeter Steven Bernstein is not your typical jazz cat. First off, he plays a slide trumpet. Secondly, it's not often you find a New York downtown musician interested in playing the kind of accessible and humorous music heard on Sex Mob Does Bond. Bernstein captures the original, sophisticated feel of the music, mostly composed by John Barry. Tunes like "Battle of Piz Gloria" are subdued and dreamy, while the carnivalistic "007" is more upbeat, sounding like it was played by a bunch of drunken spy sailors on furlough. Something that will make you scratch your head, tap your foot and giggle, Sex Mob Does Bond captures everything that is fun and quirky about this band and makes a great tribute album in the process. Mission accomplished."

JAMES BOND 30th ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION

This double disc compilation was sent over by Rocket From Mars at a time when one of the true Greats of film music sadly passed away. I don't think anyone would argue that he single-handedly defined the style of action music when he became the regular composer on the Bond series. How many times over the last several decades have we heard music being described as "Barryesque". This album is one of the better "best of" collections as disc two features some nice rarities including unused versions and radio spots.

SHAKEN AND STIRRED

Released in 1997 and featuring Bond themes being given an update by various current artists (not always successful). The standout tracks here are Leftfield's "Space March" and Propellerheads absolutely incredible version of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", which bring the Barry-esque sound to modern electronica and should not be missed. Other vocal selections are not so impressive but this is a nice collection overall and worth a listen. Generally regarded to be David Arnold's calling card, or audition for the Bond producers. It obviously worked as he got the gig!

Featured previously in the lounge in a vinyl rip (courtesy of Rocket) this is a new CD rip and I've also scanned the covers at 600dpi.

INCREDIBLE WORLD OF BOND

Many thanks to Cedric for yet another rare record rip. This is a compilation from the 60's containing original soundtrack cues from John Barry & Monty Norman as well as excellent cover versions by Leroy Holmes. The album had two releases, one was a ten track stereo version (The blue "girls" cover above) and a twelve track mono version (The rip featured here and pictured above in Black & Green). Although the "girls" cover is from the alternate release I've put it in the file as an extra, I think it's a better cover but it's up to you which one you use....take your pick. If anyone has a rip of the blue cover stereo version above, please share it with us.

DOUBLE O HEAVEN

Yes that is the original cover, I know it's not very imaginative but there you go.
This has got to be a pretty rare one, I don't even remember where I bought this from.
It's Bond themes played on acoustic guitar with a couple of self-penned tracks. It's a nice addition to the genre and makes a suprising change to our usual posts.
I don't have any info on this at all, the cover is a tracklist and recording venue, I have a feeling this is a private/amateur release.

FOR YOUR EARS ONLY

Something a little different now, this is a small group of jazz musicians playing some very dynamic spy music. The tracks are laced with bits of dialogue and sound effects which create a real soundtrack feel. Although there are only seven of them playing, they manage to produce quite a big sound between them. It's crime jazz, in a modern style.

BIG BOND MOVIE THEMES

Here is one of my favourite bandleaders of the 70's, I grew up listening to and collectiong LP's by him, and used to have almost everything he did (especially TV stuff) but when I left school I turned to the dark side and sold my record collection to make way for "The Future" of music, the amazing new shiny Compact Disc.
I really regret doing that now of course, but at least thanks to the internet and all the generous bloggers out there, I've managed to get a lot of my original collection back (albeit without the lovely large artwork on the covers).
Anyway here we go, no-one can blast out a big-band orchestral tune like Mr. Love.

MUSIC FROM THE SPY WHO LOVED ME & OTHER GREAT JAMES BOND THRILLERS

Well the title is certainly a mouthful, why don't they just call it "Bond in Action" or something. This is another of the endless "cash-in's" released when Bond was reinvented in the 70's by Roger Moore. If nothing else you have gotta love that artwork.

THE JAMES BOND SONGBOOK

The James Bond Songbook, another of the the almost endless Bond influenced record releases of the 1960's. This fantastic original 1965 James Bond Songbook LP from jazz veteran Jimmy Bond, accompanied by some of LA's highest quality session jazz players.
As many of the James Bond movies had not been made when the original The James Bond Songbook LP was recorded, five of the twelve tracks are cover versions of original Bond movie music (Thunderball, From Russia With Love, 007 Theme From Dr No, and Goldfinger), with the rest being genuine James (Jimmy) Bond originals being sold as "personal interpretations of Ian Fleming's stories".

THE WORLD OF JAMES BOND ADVENTURE!

Here is a great album by the Big Bombastic Orchestra of Roland Shaw. This has some amazing orchestrations and arrangements, excellent stuff. This is a compilation of several LP's that Roland release during the 70's, if anyone has the original records to share, please do.
The original cover (the blue one above) was OK but I felt it didn'y really stand out so as I enjoy designing my own covers I thought I would do my own (the brown one above) hope you like it.
