THE BOND COLLECTION

RARE MORTON STEVENS

This is a collection of Morton Steven's rarer tracks from the late sixties right up to the early eighties. Thanks to VSMS for taking the time to put this collection together. Covers are my own design. Although this doesn't include his most famous theme (Hawaii Five-O) you can find that a few posts back in the archives.

STARSKY & HUTCH (1975-79)

Many thanks to Quint for this amazing dvd rip of all four seasons of Starsky & Hutch. He has painstakingly gone through all the episodes and extracted the music, then compiled them into "suites" for this incredible collection. His dvd rip of season one can be found HERE in the archives but this is a revisited and revamped work. I couldn't come up with a better idea for a cover than my original design for his season one so I decided to just change the info to suit this collection.

Many thanks again to Quint for all his hard work in compiling this incredible album. If you enjoy it, please leave him a comment!

YOU'RE NICKED!

This is my very first attempt to rip audio from dvd's. I have a new found respect for those that do this as it takes a lot of hard work. I consider this a companion to the official "Shut It!" album, with thanks to voodoo magic for originally coming up with the title. He also supplied the vinyl rip of the Tony Hatch penned theme to Sweeney 2. All other audio is taken from the various releases I had to work with. Featured are the main opening/closing themes from Regan (the original pilot), the classic television series and the two big-screen spin-off films produced in 1976 and 1978. To complete the package I have also designed some covers which will sit alongside the Shut It release.

SHAKEN AND STIRRED

Released in 1997 and featuring Bond themes being given an update by various current artists (not always successful). The standout tracks here are Leftfield's "Space March" and Propellerheads absolutely incredible version of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", which bring the Barry-esque sound to modern electronica and should not be missed. Other vocal selections are not so impressive but this is a nice collection overall and worth a listen. Generally regarded to be David Arnold's calling card, or audition for the Bond producers. It obviously worked as he got the gig!

Featured previously in the lounge in a vinyl rip (courtesy of Rocket) this is a new CD rip and I've also scanned the covers at 600dpi.

CRIME MIX

This is a little project isbum has been working on for quite a while, squirreling away tracks here and there waiting for just the right ingredients to bake this beauty. Contained in this Crime Mix compilation are 48 tracks with an accent on action and suspense! Even the great cover design was his own concept, I merely put the elements together and gave it a spit 'n polish. Strap yourself in and prepare to be aurally assaulted. This is...Crime, isbum style!

JAMES BOND MIX

A big thanks to LF3 for giving us permission to share this mix of his here on the Lounge. This is a superb collection of sixty tracks taken from the original soundtracks of the earlier Bond films. This collection has been skillfully edited and mixed together to give you a 55 minute non-stop Bondathon of all the classic well-known cues, mainly from the John Barry era but also a few others from composers George Martin and Marvin Hamlisch. I've listened to this a few times and have put together these quick covers to help complete the package.

OSS 117 : LOST IN RIO

Composer Ludovic Bource once again supplies this great retro inspired score for this sequel to the 2006 big-screen adventures of agent Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath. French comedian Jean Duajrdin once again reprises his role as the main character. Check out the jukebox for a sample track. Thanks again to Rocket for sharing this rip. I must admit to not having seen either of these movies (yet!) and am not that great a fan of the comic style used in some of these spy films. But I must admit to really liking the look and feel of these movies, which have obviously been made with much love and attention to detail of the period and genre.

OSS 117 : CAIRO, NEST OF SPIES

OSS 117 was born in 1949, penned by Jean Bruce. Four years before the first James Bond novel was published, this author invented an American spy of French descent employed by the Office of Strategic Serices- OSS, the CIA's predecessor under the number 117. The agent scours the world, from impossible missions to pretty girls. The tone is brisk; the novels mingle exoticism, action and spying. Success will come quickly and will not be belied: 265 adventure novels translated into 17 languages, 75 million sold copies, plays, comic books and eight movies make up the OSS 117 legend.

Almost six decades later, the manly and seductive hero, ready to confront all kinds of danger, remains one of the first publishing phenomena and a cultural icon of the sixties.

OSS 117 is the code name for Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, a free-lancing American secret agent of French origin. Four films were released between 1963 and 1966, featuring scores by Michel Magne. Here, however, we have the great score to this updated, light-hearted version composed by Ludovic Bource. Thanks to Rocket for this rip.

211 : ROBBERY IN PROGRE$$

As many of you may already know, every month or so the FranklyYES team put together a soundtrack compilation. We have featured a previous volume here at the lounge over on the Bond page. These collections are compiled by Isbum from individual track submissions by the visitors to the site, then custom covers are designed to go with it. I've supplied quite a few of these covers in the past and this is the latest.
This project had the theme of "robbery in progress" so the album is quite fitting for inclusion here.
This volume (number 11) was made available in two separate versions. The standard individual track album and a mixed version where the tracks blend into one another creating a non-stop action-packed listen! The mix format actually suites this type of music really well but if you prefer the tracks separated then you can grab the standard version HERE. The standard release has some awesome covers by Carrasco, another regular contributor to these projects.
Complete tracklist in the comments. Enjoy!

GREAT FILM AND TELEVISION THEMES

Anyone who has delved into my "Crime Jazz Collection" will know that I am a fan of Cyril Stapleton and his big bombastic orchestra. Although the LP cover (featuring the sixties icon "Twiggy") would suggest a collection of twenties flavoured compositions, it in fact contains some supreme arrangements of classic themes. Cyril lends his considerable skill to the likes of, Diamonds Are Forever, The French Connection and the always popular Persuaders theme. There are also some choice selections from other genre's covered too!

THE AVENGERS

The Avengers is one of the most fondly thought of Cult TV shows of all time. It one of the slickest British productions ever made, which is a testimony to the fantastic acting talent and production crew.

It started life as a kind of spin off to the early 60's drama Police Surgeon, which starred Ian Hendry as Dr Geoffrey Brent a London doctor who also works as a police surgeon. Although audiences responded positively to Hendry, the series itself did not prove to be particularly popular, and so ABC decided to cancel it after twelve episodes. However, Director of Drama Sydney Newman stepped in and gave Police Surgeon a new lease on life. Hot to capitalize on Hendry's star potential, he added a co-star, Patrick Macnee and Dr. Geoffrey Brent became Dr. David Keel. In the opening episode, Keel's wife has been murdered. He soon joined by government agent John Steed (McNee) to Avenge her death.

Hendry decided not to continue after the first season and top billing was passed to McNee who was assisted by number of companions in the second season. By the third season the studio settled with the judo kicking Cathy Gale played by Honnor Blackman as Steed's partner. But Blackman left the show at the end of the season to play Bond girl Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. Diana Rigg then joined the show as Emma Peel for two seasons, then Linda Thorson was Tara King for a season and then finally by Gareth Hunt and Joanna Lumley were Gambit and Purdey in 70's update 'The New Avengers'.

Although the show stated out as a gritty crime thriller it was not long before it evolved into a surreal, stylish action adventure series that is still loved the world over. Cult TV at it's very best.

THE NEW AVENGERS

The New Avengers was a sequel series to The Avengers that was made some seven years after the original series. The line-up changed slightly in that an additional male character, Mike Gambit, was added to the old formula of John Steed and his glamorous female sidekick, in this case Purdey. The format of spy stories with only a passing acquaintance with realism remained unchanged from the original series.

The New Avengers only actually ran for two seasons, producing a total of twenty-six episodes, seven of which were made with overseas finance. This lead to three of the episodes being based in France, and four of them in Canada.

THE PROFESSIONALS

This series chronicled the lives of Bodie and Doyle, top agents for Britain's CI5 (Criminal Intelligence 5), and their controller, George Cowley. The mandate of CI5 was to fight terrorism and similar high-profile crimes. Cowley, a hard ex-MI5 operative, hand-picked each of his men. Bodie was a cynical ex-SAS paratrooper and mercenary whose nature ran to controlled violence, while his partner, Doyle, came to CI5 from the regular police force, and was more of an open minded liberal. Their relationship was often contentious, but they were the top men in their field, and the ones to whom Cowley always assigned to the toughest cases.
The adrenaline pumping theme tune (along with all incidental music) was written by the master.

ROLAND SHAW

ROLAND SHAW 1920-2008

On the face of things, it seemed an easy task. Just take a batch of mainly well-known Spy Thriller and Secret Agent movie themes and assemble them on various albums for consumption by an already adoring audience. It was something that couldbe offered to any capable journeyman arranger. But Roland Shaw is rather more than that.He took what was already there, the high popular action enhancers whose every phrase was known to millions worldwide, and then added a special something that provided an added gloss, a further degree of excitement or romance. The online music Space Age Musicmaker astutely observes: "Shaw actually improves upon the originals, if only subtly. His arrangement of Jerry Goldsmith's theme from In Like Flint, for example, adds a persistent rhythm line tapped out on alto cowbells that drives the number to a higher level of intensity." Shaw, now a sprightly 88, merely chuckles when questioned about the manner in which he enhanced this already brilliant array of material. "It was mainly down to stere", he modestly claims. "We were working in Phase 4 Stereo and able to bring something extra to those recordings." He forgets, or is reluctant to recall, a lifetime in music that ensured he would be hailed as one of Britain's finest orchestral arrangers. Long before The Beatles dominated the US charts, Shaw was engaged in doing exactly that, piecing together Vera Lynn's version of Auf Wiedersehen which, in 1952, topped the American charts for nine straight weeks, an incredible achievement for that, or any other era. Shaw owns up that he's proud of the achievement: "It wasn't just in America and Britain" he says. "It was something that happened all over the world.

Born "Roland Edgar Shaw-Tomkins", on 26th of May, 1920, he spent his schooldays in the Kettering-Wellingborough area of Northhamptonshire before attending the Trinity College of Music. Initially he was a drummer but he opted for a career as a pianist after hearing jazz pianist Teddy Wilson. He became part of a band known as The Royal Kitie Juniors, during World War II, as Sgt: Tomkins, he served in the RAF and led the RAF No.1 Band of the Middle East Forces but returned to the civilian big band scene, opting to be known as Roland Shaw and writing for both Geraldo and Ted Heath, additionally playing and arranging for the exciting Teddy Foster band. His talent recognised, he worked with American arranger Toots Camarata who commissioned a suite for woodwind, earning Shaw a substantial fee - which he immediately spent on a vintage Rolls Royce. Established as an arranger-producer with Decca, he also worked with Noel Coward and the BBC Show Band. But it was with Decca/London that he continued making an impact, proving prolific in his work rate.

Singers such as Tommy Steele, Lita Roza, Lee Lawrence, Joan Regan, Mel Torme and Jimmy Young benefited from Shaw's expertise while many of the orchestral recordings by Franck Chacksfield, Stanley Black and Mantovani, bore the Shaw halmark. The Venetian born Mantovani had already conquered America with his cascading string sounds but wanted to add a more contemporary feel to his work. During 1954 he added Roland Shaw to his arranging team to achieve this very purpose. It proved to be a blossoming relationship. Colin McKenzie's Mantovani biography claims that Shaw contributed over 150 scores to Mantovani's library up to 1975. "But I think it was many more than that" chuckles Shaw as he recals the huge amount of work resulting from his friendship with the orchestral leader. And it was a genuine friendship between Monty and Roly, as theyhailed each other. They not only shared a passion for high quality music but also for high powered cars, Shaw racing at Goodwood, Silverstone and Brands Hatch, additionally appearing as a race marchall at Le Mans. But it was the musical aspect of the relationship that kept Shaw up at nights, Colin McKenzie recounting: "He did most of his arranging at night, when the phone had stopped ringing, sitting at a piano with a board in front of him, sometimes until three in three in the morning. Then he would attend the sessions and sometimes helped out in the control box, using his scores." As chief arranger and MD for Decca/London during the label's Phase 4 years, he helped Marconi develop various stereo techniques which were employed on various albums by the Ted Heath Orchestra plus the brilliant series of releases under his own name. The musicians employed were always of superb quality. "I gave these players so many sessions that they were able to give Phase 4 and London Records priority" says Shaw. "And Duke Ellington once said when asked how he managed to keep so many fine players together - I gave them money!" When informed of Poker's ambition to create an all-encompassing collection of his Spy and Secret Agent scores, Shaw seemed bemused. "Why would anybody want to hear those after all these years?" he queried.

Roland Shaw, a doyen of both big band swing and string orchestral recordings, was a natural when it came to soundtracks. Along the way he fashioned many of his own, supplying musical backdrops to such films as The Great Waltz, The Song Of Norway, Straight On Til Morning, The Secret Of My Success plus unaccredited orchestrations for The Duke Wore Jeans, Dance Hall, Kongs and Summer Holiday. Revisiting the brainwashed world of Harry Palmer (The Ipcress File), the bikini-decorated universe of Derek Flint (Our Man Flint), the Le Carre charted maze of Alex Leamas (The Spy Who Came In From The Cold) and the avenues of absurdities trod by the bowler-hatted John Steed and his lethal female partners (The Avengers) came easily to him. Perhaps the attraction, his love of this particular genre and its array of disparate heroes stemmed from Shaw's romance with the world of classic cars.

At various times, his garage had housed not only the aforementioned Rolls Royce but also a Bentley, a Jaguar 3.8, a Ferrari and a souped-up mini-Cooper along with a couple of high-powered motor-cycles. Imagining 007 being pursued in an Aston Martin or one of the several Chevvy's that appeared in the early Bond films, plus the Saint's Volvo 1800, along with Steed's ever-present vintage Bentley, was something that easily came to mind as Shaw indulged in one of his dead-of-night orchestrating sessions. Reasons why, perhaps, his storming, jazz-boogaloo version of Peter Gunn tops that of Henry Mancini's original rendition or Shaw's purely instrumental interpretation of Diamonds Are Forever manages to sound like an entire film soundtrack in its own right. Little wonder that, in recent times, the vinyl albums that Roland Shaw released during the heyday of Decca/London have been fetching fees in excess of fifty pounds from those seeking the best in spy and secret agent sounds.

Roland Shaw is a vastly under-represented artist on disc today. The best way to appreciate his genius and build a collection is unfortunately to scour the second-hand market for LP's from his "golden-age" of the seventies (or search the related music blogs such as this).
